Title: Shrinkage
Author: Sanders Diggs
Illustrator: Mate Lampert
This book is empowering, sweet, and beautifully illustrated. I feel like the title could have been ‘Mya’s Magical Hair’. Mya shows us that her hair can do magic tricks, it can shrink, and it can be straightened out, it can be styled in so many ways; braids, twists, puffs or fro’s and she looks good in those styles too. I love how the author-illustrator team captured Mya rocking a new hairdo on every page. I believe this book might serve as hairstyle inspiration for kids who want to recreate Mya’s hairstyles. Overall, this book celebrates the majesty of African Hair, a welcome addition to the growing list of picture books that celebrate African/African American Joy.
